Punjab Schools, Colleges, and Universities to Reopen Tomorrow After Ceasefire Agreement

Chandigarh, May 11, 2025 — Following the India-Pakistan ceasefire, all educational institutions in Punjab — including schools, colleges, and universities — will reopen from Monday, May 12, after a three-day precautionary closure amid heightened border tensions.

Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains made the announcement on Sunday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that normal academic operations will resume across the state.

“All educational institutions — schools, colleges, and universities — across Punjab shall reopen from tomorrow. Regular classes and examinations will proceed as per academic schedule. We are immensely proud of our brave armed forces. Jai Hind Ki Sena. Vasda Rahe Punjab,” Bains posted.

Background: Why Were Schools Closed in Punjab?

On May 8, the Punjab government ordered a statewide shutdown of all educational institutions for three days due to the escalating military conflict between India and Pakistan. The move came in the wake of Operation Sindoor, a strategic strike launched by the Indian armed forces post-midnight on May 6, targeting cross-border terror infrastructure.

In response, Pakistan carried out shelling and drone attacks across northwestern Indian border states, including Punjab. The tension led to widespread safety concerns, prompting the temporary closure of schools, colleges, and universities.

What Students and Parents Need to Know:

  • Reopening Date: Monday, May 12, 2025
  • Applies To: All government, private, and aided educational institutions
  • Resumption of Activities: Regular classes and examinations will continue as scheduled
  • Safety Measures: Local administrations are coordinating with law enforcement to ensure secure campus environments

Ceasefire Brings Calm to the Region

The announcement comes just a day after a mutual ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan was brokered, reportedly with U.S. diplomatic intervention. This follows a week of military escalation that saw India deploying BrahMos cruise missiles in its first-ever combat use, hitting key Pakistani airbases including Noor Khan airbase in Rawalpindi.

The ceasefire, confirmed by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, instructed both countries’ DGMOs to halt all military actions on land, air, and sea starting 5 PM on Saturday. Though reports of minor violations surfaced, the situation has largely stabilized.

Final Note:

With classes and exams resuming, students are advised to stay updated via their institution’s official channels and adhere to any safety advisories issued locally. The Punjab government has also assured citizens that sufficient security arrangements are in place.
